According to the World Health Organization, medication adherence refers to "the extent to which the person's behavior corresponds with the agreed recommendations from a health care provider." Although the words adherence and compliance are often used interchangeably, adherence is different from compliance. Compliance is the degree to which a patient follows a prescriber's instructions. 2 Compliance denotes a patient's submission to a doctor's authority, 3-5 In contrast, adherence denotes a partnership between the patient and the doctor to improve the patient's health by incorporating the doctor's Medical Adherence judgment and the patient's values, lifestyle, and treatment preferences. 6-8
