Primary treatment removes the majority of suspended solids and bacteria from Water Operator. The remaining water is called effluent. Secondary treatment uses aerobic microorganisms to break down biodegradable organic matter, producing inorganic end-products such as CO2, NH3, and H2O. The process is classified as anaerobic or aerobic based on the biochemical oxygen demand of the wastewater.
