BS4 VS BS6 – FUEL, PERFORMANCE, ENGINE, NORMS & MORE
The Indian government has established the Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) to reduce pollution caused by cars and two-wheelers. Beginning 1 April 2020, all automakers, including those of two- and four-wheeled vehicles, must produce, market, and register only BS6 (BSVI) vehicles. This page discusses the main differences between the BS4 VS BS6 engines, as well as the new BS6 engine's performance.

BS4

We will review BS4 (BSIV) emission requirements, engine performance, and their significance before learning about BS6 emissions.

BSES, the country's regulatory body for vehicle emissions, introduced the first emission standards in 2000 known as India 2000. While the first versions of BS2 and BS3 were introduced in 2005 and 2010, respectively, BS4 norms with stricter emission limitations or standards came into effect in 2017.

BS6

The Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) regulates pollution emissions from moving vehicles in the country. The standards to control vehicle emissions in India are set by the

India 2000 was the first emission standard or norm, followed by BS2 and BS3 in 2005 and 2010, respectively. BS4 was introduced in 2017, although the preceding three were introduced periodically.

The BS6 emission standard, which is the sixth generation of the emission standard, reduces pollution substantially over the BS4 standard. This is also because the BS5 (BSV) was omitted to transition to improved emission standards.

Difference Between BS4 VS BS6

BS4 VS BS6 have some changes. Emission rules known as BS4 and BS6 define the maximum levels of pollutants that can be released from car and two-wheeler exhausts. The BS6 emission standards are stricter than the BS4 standards. Manufacturers also use this transition to upgrade their vehicles with new features and safety criteria, which is the biggest or most significant change.

BS6 fuel has a sulphur concentration that is five times lower (10ppm) than BS4 fuel (50ppm).

  • BS6 fuel has additives that mimic the lubricating characteristics of sulphur but contains less sulphur than BS4 fuel. BS4 VS BS6

  • DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) are both involved in BS6. It didn't involve BS4.

  • BS6 uses the Real Driving Emission norm to measure a vehicle's pollutant emissions in real-world conditions. With BS4, it wasn't the case.

  • The Onboard Diagnostic (OD) functionality is present in BS6 but was not present in BS4.
