Bacteria outnumber cells in the human body by a factor of ten. Bacteria can be found on the skin, in the mouth, and in the nose, but the vast majority are found in the gut, specifically the large intestine. This is the primary reason that (some) Dietary Fibers are necessary for good health. They act as prebiotics by feeding the "good" bacteria in the intestine. In this way, they encourage the growth of "good" gut bacteria, which can have a variety of health benefits. The beneficial bacteria produce nutrients for the body, such as short-chain fatty acids like acetate, propionate, and butyrate, the latter of which appears to be the most important. These short-chain fatty acids can feed colon cells, resulting in a smaller gut. Improvements in digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis have been reported.
