Safety training is important for employees so that they perform their work safely and minimize the risk of accidents, injuries, near misses, illnesses and property damage but effective safety training is more than that. It is the end product of a focussed, concentrated effort that takes a lot of planning and know-how. Below are a few tips on how you can make your environment training more effective.

DETERMINE YOUR HAZARDS:
Before implementing a training course, determine the hazards in your near surroundings. Your safety training will be less effective if you don’t know what dangers your employees are facing.
Performing a Job Safety Analysis(JSA) is a good starting point. During this process,a group of people will scan your work area to look for hazards and will then work to reduce the chances of injuries occurring from those hazards.

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE DIFFERENT TRAINING REGULATIONS
It is important to know about the different training requirements that the National Policy on Safety, Health and Environment at Workplace(NPSHEW) places on your worksite. Firstly because abiding by the law is a good thing and secondly, by following these regulations, you are not ignoring any hazards which you might not even be aware of. It also helps set a baseline which you can use to improve your training.

IDENTIFY YOUR LEARNING OBJECTIVES
While designing your training program, it is important to know what are your learning objectives i.e, what is it that you want your employees to learn from the program. For example, you can provide training to tell employees how to respond in a certain situation and then evaluate if they are doing it during training. Employees will take training seriously if they know they will gain something from it.

KNOW YOUR STAFF BETTER
Your safety training will be more effective if your employees need it in mind. What kind of training do they prefer? Classroom or field? Would they prefer it online or as written material? What is their expertise level on the topic? These are some of the questions you should think about while planning your training. The better you know your employees, the more effective the environment training will be.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT TESTING
Only training is not sufficient. You also need to test your employees to make sure they apply what they have learned before sending them back to work. This step is important otherwise you will not know whether they have actually learnt something or not. Remember a hazard can be life threatening and can also affect your business. You don’t want to be in a situation where there is an actual hazard and your employees fail to respond to it.
