A urinary catheter is a hollow, soft tube that is inserted into the bladder to drain urine. Catheters are sometimes required for people who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to empty their bladders normally, i.e. by passing urine into a toilet or urinal. When continuous bladder drainage is required, indwelling catheters are usually required for a few weeks or months, but they are occasionally required for long-term use. Catheters are made from a variety of materials and can be left in place for several weeks. When the catheter is inserted, a small balloon device is inflated to keep it from falling out. Under no circumstances should you attempt to remove the catheter before the balloon has completely deflated. If you have a catheter problem, seek immediate assistance.
When you are unable to urinate, the situation can quickly escalate. As urine accumulates in the bladder, it becomes uncomfortable and, eventually, painful. If the problem persists, the bladder may become overly full and urine may back up into your kidneys, causing permanent damage. When this occurs, a sterile, flexible tube called a urinary catheter is inserted into the urethra (the tube through which urine exits the body) and gently pushed up until the end rests in your bladder.
