Cancer cells do not interact with neighboring cells in the same way that normal cells do. Signals sent by other accessible cells are received by normal cells. - When normal cells are damaged or old, they either repair themselves or undergo apoptosis. Cancer cells either do not repair themselves or do not undergo apoptosis.

Cancer cells can create inflammation as they die. Small blood vessels leak, resulting in edema and redness. Immune system cells migrate to the location and release chemicals and proteins that cause harm to adjacent structures and cells, and prolonged inflammation promotes cancer growth.
