Experts have a long way to go before they can link fructose to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Higher fructose intake has been linked to these conditions, but clinical trials have yet to show that it causes them. Sugary drinks and foods with added sugar should be avoided for a variety of reasons, including empty calories, weight gain, and blood sugar swings. Lustig adds another.
