In an exclusive interview given to leading regional web portal Telangana Today, Ameen Khawaja, founder & CEO, pTron Said “In January, we raised Rs 32 crore to meet our expansion. Out of this, we will invest Rs 5-6 crore in R&D and manufacturing. We are scouting for a location in and around Hyderabad. The proposed facility will generate about 100 jobs. We want to make earphones, chargers, and other products at this facility. We currently have a fulfilment centre in Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh) where we employ 180 people.”
He added, “The company’s revenues are growing consistently. In 2019, we had a net revenue of Rs 30 crore. Last year, we clocked Rs 102 crore revenue. This year also, we are expecting good revenue growth. Work-from-home led to 250 per cent sales growth for pTron.”
The company has sold over seven million units until FY21. Growing at a rate of 50 per cent quarter-on-quarter, pTron aims to sell an additional five million units in FY22, taking the total to 12 million units. pTron sees good demand for earphones with environmental noise cancellation (ENC) features and will continue to introduce features that customers are primarily looking for.
Market presence
The company’s products in the audio and wireless category are available across Amazon India, Flipkart, and other major e-commerce platforms, besides offline stores. Today offline accounts for over 12 per cent of its sales, while online sales still dominate.
pTron is strengthening its ties with Reliance and Croma across offline and hybrid formats. The company is also in talks with logistics players to solve the challenges in the market, to address the supply-demand gap.
He added, “We have 35-40 products and 130-140 variants in total. In the audio segment, we are the top fifth player in the market as per IDC research. We are bringing innovative products at affordable prices with prices ranging from Rs 799-Rs1,500 (TWS earphones). In January, we launched a smartwatch, and we are expecting Rs 30-40 crore revenues from the smartwatch segment alone. We will have at least 4-5 models in the smartwatch category and expect a fast pickup in sales.”
