Progressive Tinnitus Management
Progressive Tinnitus Management, also known as pulsatile tinnitus, is an audiological treatment that has been successfully adopted worldwide in both Department of Defense and VA practices to effectively treat tinnitus. The approach uses selective attention to target specific symptoms of the disorder in order to control or even cure it. The treatment is designed to be comfortable and minimally intrusive while maintaining safety throughout the process. The technique utilizes two methods in order to control the disorder; one is the Pulsatile Tinnitus Treatment and the other is the Pulsatile Tinnitus Management (PTC).
A multidisciplinary team screening process is used when treating tinnitus. During this screening process, a wide variety of factors including age, gender, ethnicity, and hearing history are considered to determine which form of tinnitus is being experienced by the patient. Other factors that are considered during this screening process include current medications, lifestyle, stress levels, and any current or past traumatic experiences. After the screening process is complete and suitable Tinnitus Management is determined, treatment begins with an assessment of the severity of the disorder.
Progressive Tinnitus Management, or PTNO, is a common way of tinnitus management used in many cases. This method utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach that includes audiologists, ear, and nose, throat, and brain specialists. The multidisciplinary team consists of therapists, counselors, neurologists, physiatrists, medical oncologists, psychologists, hearing specialists, and musicians. These individuals meet monthly to determine what type of treatment is needed. Based on the severity of the symptoms, suitable tinnitus management is either chosen or discussed, and then the patient is scheduled for treatment.
