Biophotonics

The branch of science that bridges the biological and optical sciences is known as biophotonics. It includes the use of light as an energy source for fundamental research and advancements in the fields of biology, pharmacology, environmental science, agriculture, and medicine. Although the word is still used today, some of the oldest records of the field's history undoubtedly date back to Antony van Leeuwenhoek's use of single lenses to make the first microbiological observations in the 17th century. Niels Ryber Finsen received The Noble Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1903 in appreciation of his work using concentrated light radiation to treat diseases, particularly lupus vulgaris, and for creating a new field in medical research.
