A Legal Document Assistant, LDA is a non-lawyer,professional that is authorized to prepare legal documents without anattorney’s supervision.
Legal Document Assistants have graduated from an AmericanBar Association Approved Program, purchased a bond, and registered with thecounty.
Paralegals do not require education, filing a bond, orregistration. Paralegals are not permitted to assist the public with preparinglegal forms.
There are still certain restrictions for Legal DocumentAssistants. An LDA can not provide legal advice and can not represent you incourt. LDA (s) can only prepare legal documents at the client’s direction. Lawsconcerning Legal Document Assistants are set forth in the California Businessand Professions Code (BPC 6400-6415).
REGISTERED AND BONDED LEGAL DOCUMENT ASSISTANTS
How To Become An LDA
Every Legal Document Assistant, LDA, must register with theCounty Clerk where they reside. To register as a Legal Document Assistant inSacramento County, you must appear in-person at the County Recorder’s officelocations and:
Present valid photo identification (such as a driver’slicense, passport, or military I.D.)
Present an LDA bond in the amount of $25,000 which names theregistrant as principal and provides the term of the bond
Complete an application form:
Individual Application Form
Corporation/Partnership Application Form
