Pulse Oximeter
A Pulse Oximeter measures the amount of oxygen in the blood by shining light through the skin. It has taken the place of the arterial blood gas test as a vital sign because it is quick, simple to use, painless, and provides continuous readings. However, recent research has revealed that pulse oximeters are not as accurate as previously thought. The Food and Drug Administration acknowledged the issue in a safety communication in February 2021, warning that Pulse Oximeter may be less accurate in people with dark skin pigmentation. The Critical Care Societies Collaborative petitioned the FDA to do more than that a year later.
