Lavender and tea tree oil may contain endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which have been linked to a variety of health problems. EDCs are compounds in the environment (air, soil, or water), food sources, personal care products, and manufactured products that interfere with your body's endocrine system's regular operation. In addition, clinical studies have discovered a possible link between the topical use of essential oil and the development of male gynecomastia, or the growth of breast tissue, in prepubescent boys. Because lavender and tea tree oil contain hundreds of compounds, NIEHS researchers wanted to know which of these substances exhibited hormonal action that could lead to prepubertal gynecomastia.
