Petrochemicals have a negative impact on the environment, according to its detractors, despite the fact that they produce useful products. Some critics contend that the petrochemicals used to make plastic plates, plastic containers, and other packaging materials may contain possible carcinogens that, at high temperatures, leach into food or liquids. Environmental advocacy group The Sierra Club asserted in 2016 that certain animals perish after ingesting plastics containing particular petrochemicals and that some petrochemical-based products are not biodegradable, remaining in the ecosystem or oceans.
