Various government groups have established some basic norms that prohibit the use of capnography.
In October 2010, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) changed the fundamental anesthetic monitoring requirements. "During moderate or deep sedation, the adequacy of ventilation shall be evaluated by continuous observation of qualitative clinical signs and monitoring for the presence of exhaled carbon dioxide, unless precluded or invalidated by the nature of the patient, procedure, or equipment," according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
