Vaccination is the most effective way to shield you from the deadly coronavirus. In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, different vaccines are administered in India and are available to the general mass. Nevertheless, there is hesitation to get the vaccine jab among several people. For them, awareness programs are being conducted through various platforms.

Have a quick look at the below stats based on the studies conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)

  • Two shots have helped prevent deaths by 95% due to Covid-19 in the 2nd wave.
  • Deaths have been reported to reduce by 82% among those vaccinated with one dose, according to ICMR

The study conducted during the second wave by the ICMR has also revealed that the COVID-19 vaccine is effective against the delta variant that has been found to be highly transmissible as well as virulent.

About Long Terms Effects of COVID-19 Vaccines

When it comes to the safety of vaccines for the long term, experts say that they have confidence in the long-term safety of the coronavirus vaccines.  Health care systems believe the risks of COVID-19 outweigh the risks of the coronavirus vaccine. This recommendation has been made by ICSI (Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement in the USA) based on the best evidence available today.

However, the recommendations by ICSI may change over as more studies will be conducted about COVID-19 and/or its treatments.

Let’s go through the detailed reports of ICSI.

COVID-19 Long-Haulers

If you think about the long-term effects of the COVID-19 vaccine, it is also important to consider the long-term effects of the deadly virus itself. While not enough true long data is available, scientists in the USA have learned about COVID-19 ‘long-haulers’ i.e. ones who experience issues months beyond their initial recovery.

Chronic systems include shortness of breath, fatigue, joint pain, cough, and chest pain. Lung scarring from the virus is also a concern that can cause more chronic problems.

Let’s assume medical tests conducted months after recovery show damage to the heart muscle, even there are people who experience mild systems of coronavirus. This may increase the possibility of heart complications or heart failure in the future. Even in young people, COVID-19 is causing seizures, strokes, and Guillain-Barre syndrome – a type of condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves.

Does the COVID-19 vaccine help with coronavirus long-haulers?The answer requires rigorous study, which is being conducted to find the right answer.

The Long and More Hopeful Answer

There are many anecdotal reports that have been made public recently. In these reports coronavirus longer haulers have experienced an improvement in symptoms after receiving the vaccine. Researchers are comparing information from different patient stories informal surveys and clinicians’ experiences due to the absence of large studies.

  • Approximately 40% of the 577 long COVID patients communicated by the group Survivor Corps state they felt better after getting two shots of vaccine.
  • A small UK study, not yet peer-reviewed revealed about 23% of long coronavirus patients had an “increase in symptom resolution” after vaccination when compared to about 15% of those who were unvaccinated.

Yet, these reports are far from final and there have also been clinicians in post-COVID clinics that have not seen this phenomenon.  Determining formal studies is required to affirm how vaccination affects persistent COVID symptoms.
