Let’s analyse what’s going on:
The grandmother has knitted a jumper which is not very good, long arms, dropped stitches, the hear could be in the wrong place and so on. So – does she realise that she’s made something not very good or is she un-aware?
The grandson, he is a well-mannered young man and even though the jumper looks bad on him, he will where it because it was made with so much love and good intention. So, in turn he gives her a hug which makes her feel good.
So, in this scene they both give each other an act of love & kindness.
That’s fine, but it means this scene needs more time the other. Because we need to show that the grandmother appreciates the grandsons hug.
I personally think that the solution here is to make it clearer that two sides of this story. So, I think that in the first instance the grandmother can be looking doubtful, she knows it’s not a great jumper. I think that the problem could be that the arms are too long. In which case, the grandson could come up with a solution and his own simple gesture. He pulls up the sleeves, and immediately the jumper looks cool and like something he could wear. This makes the grandmother smile (and loose here doubts) and then they can have a really meaningful hug.
I think that giving him this action will allow a moment in the acting where we can have a really nice exchange between the two characters, we feel their connection, their history and their relationship. It goes way beyond this one jumper.
Hairdressing Scene
Hear we show a dad struggling with his little daughter’s hair style. We have a great opportunity to show two really contrasting characters types, the young girl who is an expert in hair design and who know exactly what she wants and the father who is trying his best but completely unskilled at this task – we can communicate all of this in a single frame – it’s all about creating a composition that shows exactly what I have just described. We need to be really bold and obvious with this set up. That comes through the exaggeration of the hair style and the performance of each character. Here’s where we have to be careful, we don’t want to get into ‘over acting’. So again, it’s about casting ‘character types’ that fit perfectly our story without the need to ask them to start really over acting.
In the second shot we show the girl giving the heart pin. And I believe we will need a 3rd shot where we reveal the outcome of the hair styling. The heart is indeed holding everything together, but it’s a huge mess, or is it?? Maybe it’s a new fashion…And this is the sentiment that we feel when we show the little girl reacting with love and smiles and gratitude to her father for all his efforts. (Again, this is all in the performance and in the fact that when we direct the scene, we know exactly what’s the emotional drive for each character.)
