The removal of orthopaedic casts involves the use of an oscillating power equipment termed a "cast saw." A cast saw cuts material by rapidly oscillating or vibrating the blade back and forth over a very small angle, as opposed to a circular saw with a rotating blade. A cast spreader is usually used in conjunction with this instrument. When used over bony prominences, the Cast Saw Devices blade can lacerate the skin even if it frequently makes contact with the patient's skin without actually cutting it.
