Geometry Dash is a series of music platforming video games created by RobTop, a Swedish developer.

Geometry Dash is a series of music platforming video games created by RobTop, a Swedish developer. The first game, simply titled Geometry Dash, was released on iOS and Android on August 13, 2013. In Geometry Dash, players control an icon's movement and navigate through music-based stages while avoiding obstacles such as spikes, which quickly destroy the icon when they hit them.

There are currently 21 official levels in Geometry Dash. It's famous for its sophisticated level building system, which allows players to construct their own custom courses, share them online, and play courses created by other players. There have been almost 71 million custom levels developed. In addition to the official levels, map packs, gauntlets, the hall of fame, daily non-demon level, weekly demon level, and the search bar have all featured user-created levels. Stars, secret coins, user coins (verified only), mana orbs, and diamonds are in-game currency that may be collected via chests, official levels (where secret coins can only be obtained), and user-created levels (in which user coins can only be obtained).

Geometry Dash Meltdown, Geometry Dash World, and Geometry Dash SubZero are the three spin-off games in the series, in addition to the original game.

Gameplay

Geometry Dash is a game that may be played with a touchscreen, a keyboard, a mouse, or a game controller (depending on the platform). To control the movement of their icon, the player uses the jump feature. On touchscreen devices, the player can jump by pressing on the screen, pressing the spacebar or up arrow on a keyboard, left-clicking with a mouse, or pressing A on a gamepad. The player can constantly engage with some cars by holding down the jump button.

The goal of the game is to finish each level by reaching the end. In particular, whenever the player collides with an obstacle, the level is reset from the beginning, with the exception of Practice Mode. The speed at which the icon moves is beyond the control of the user. The in-game music's tempo and rhythm are important aspects of the game, often in relation to one another.

The player's icon in the game takes the form of one of seven cars, each of which reacts differently to each encounter. The player taps to jump from the ground in the default cube form, and holds to make repeated jumps. The player must hold to move up and release to move down in the ship. The user taps the ball to change gravity from ground to air. The player taps to jump in mid-air in the UFO. The player holds the wave to travel up diagonally and releases to move down diagonally; gravity has the reverse effect. The player controls the robot by holding and releasing to perform a lengthy jump from the ground. The player taps to reverse gravity and teleport to the nearest floor or ceiling with the spider. The same is true for the small shapes, with the exception of the mini-wave, which moves at a 62.5 degree angle.

Portals complicate player mobility by allowing them to switch between vehicles, reverse gravity, change the size of their vehicle, or mirror their movement. In addition, pads and orbs allow the player to jump automatically or in mid-air.

In the full version of Geometry Dash, there are 21 official levels, 18 of which are accessible immediately after installation. Each level has 3 secret coins that can be used to open the three locked levels and gives rewards upon completion. Official RobTop levels gradually increase in difficulty, and are divided into six categories: Easy, Normal, Hard, Harder, Insane, and Demon. There are 12 difficulty levels for user-generated levels, one of which is Auto, which is for levels where the player does not need to make any inputs to complete the level. RobTop has not rated the stars or difficulty, or it shows pictures or movies through triggers and blocks, such as the Geometry Dash Legends series developed by Geometry Dash User, OmegaFalcon. In user-generated levels, the Demon difficulty is divided into five categories: Easy, Medium, Hard, Insane, and Extreme Demons. Upon completion of each challenge, you will receive a set number of stars. The number of stars awarded in official levels differs from that awarded in user-generated levels. Official Demon levels, for example, award 14 (Clubstep or Theory of Everything 2) or 15 (Deadlocked) stars upon completion, whereas user-generated Demon levels award 10 stars. Achievements can also be earned, which unlock goodies such as symbols or colors. [7] Players can also purchase in one of three stores, where they can spend "mana orbs," an in-game money earned by playing and finishing stages. [requires citation] Each game in the series contains a practice option that can be utilized on any level and allows the player to restart from checkpoints that have been manually or automatically placed rather than starting from the beginning. In practice mode, a level cannot be formally completed, however completion can result in specific rewards such as colors and icons. User-created levels can be uploaded and downloaded in the game, while this is not available in Geometry Dash Lite or the spin-off games. Before the level may be published, the player must complete it in normal mode using all user-placed coins (to ensure that the user coins are indeed possible to collect). Changes made after the verification will make it untrustworthy. Topala determines the complexity of some custom levels. This decision can be influenced by the designer of a level, its players, and the game's moderators.

Development

Topala claims that the game started off as a project that might have gone in any direction. "It just started as a template with a cube that could crash and jump," he said, adding, "there really wasn't any detailed plan." He originally intended for it to be a computer game, but subsequently changed his mind and attempted to make it a mobile game. Topala was inspired by "The Impossible Game," and it took him four months to develop and publish the game on the App Store and Google Play Store. Geometry Jump was the name of the game in the beta version, but it was eventually changed to Geometry Dash. The Cocos2d game engine is used to create the game.

Geometry Dash had only seven levels when it was first released, all of which are now free to play on the game's free edition, as well as six more levels introduced in later upgrades in the full version. It quickly earned widespread acclaim, particularly in Canada, where it was named the most popular paid iPhone app in June 2014. There are four free versions of the game, one of which being Geometry Dash Lite, which currently features the first 13 levels from the full version (as of Lite's update 2.2).

Topala posted a sneak look video of 2.2, the first major upgrade in four years, on his YouTube account on August 14, 2021. The release date has not yet been set.

Reception

The game has received mostly positive reviews from critics since its release. "While it can get a little irritating at times, you can always complete the stages using the practice mode and then jump into the many different user-generated levels," Softpedia said of the game's style and challenge. "Geometry Dash gives all of the complexity expected from a "impossible" game while simultaneously making it more accessible to newbies," 148Apps said in a positive review. Geometry Dash was also listed as a child-friendly video game that parents could let their children play on the website Common Sense Media, with reviewer Chris Morris stating that the game was a "good way to handle frustration" and that "families can also talk about rhythm and the joy of dancing in time with music." Geometry Dash was ranked 2nd in the App Store's Top 10 Paid iPad Games and 7th in the Top 10 Paid iPhone Games categories in 2018.

Gamezebo lauded Geometry Dash World for its engrossing gameplay and enjoyable gameplay styles, yet the reviewer observed that it was not the "most intriguing looking game out there."

AndroidGuys' Gerson Noboa lauded the Geometry Dash spin-off, saying, "Geometry Dash World is a great game to have in your collection. The game gives a great, integrated experience that is rarely seen in Play Store games thanks to well interwoven graphical and auditory aspects".
