Non-cell-based, biochemical assays are thought to be less biologically relevant surrogates for predicting the complexity of a treatment response in a biological system. Cell-based assays help to speed up and improve drug development, allowing treatments to be brought to market more quickly.
Cell-based Assay are also used to evaluate a variety of functional and biochemical effects, such as cell viability, proliferation, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, signal transduction, enzyme activity, reporter gene activity, receptor occupancy, receptor binding, antibody (ADCC), and complement dependent cytotoxicity (CDC).
