Following a bone marrow, or stem cell, transplant when a patient gets bone marrow tissue or cells from a donor, Graft Versus Host Disease may develop. Allogeneic transplants fall under this category. The newly transplanted cells view the body of the receiver as being alien. When this occurs, the recipient's body is attacked by the cells. When people receive their own cells, GVHD does not happen. Autologous transplantation is this kind of surgery.
Before a transplant, the tissue and cells of potential donors are compared to the recipient to determine how well they match. When the match is near, GVHD is less likely to happen or the symptoms will be less severe.
