Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is used by several smartphone makers. Nokia began using polycarbonate in its phones with the unibody cover of the N9 in 2011. This approach was followed with subsequent Lumia phones. In 2012, Samsung began employing polycarbonate in the Galaxy S III's hyperglaze-branded detachable battery cover. This trend has continued with various Galaxy phones. In 2013, Apple began employing polycarbonate in the unibody cover of the iPhone 5C.

Benefits over glass and metal back coverings include shatter resistance (glass), bending and scratch resistance (metal), shock absorption, cheap production costs, and minimal interference with radio signals or wireless charging (weakness of metal). The surface textures of Polycarbonate back covers are glossy or matte.
