According to recent public health research published on September 2 in Science, the only dengue vaccines licenced by the FDA may potentially increase the frequency of dengue illnesses necessitating hospitalisation rather than preventing the disease. A first infection from dengue is typically mild, but a second infection from the virus typically results in a much worse infection. The four different strains of dengue virus are believed to cause varying degrees of sickness following subsequent infections depending on how the body reacts to the first infection. This has presented difficulties for scientists working on a vaccine for a long time since they were concerned that any candidate that did not fully protect could increase the danger of making people sick rather than keeping them well.
