One atom thick sheets of graphite are created when the carbon atoms in the material are connected in a hexagonal network. Given a little push, these sheets will easily cleave or glide over one another due to their inadequate connection. This is what gives graphite its extremely low hardness, flawless cleavage, and slippery sensation.

The carbon atoms of diamond, on the other hand, are connected through a framework structure. Strong covalent connections connect every carbon atom to four other carbon atoms in a three-dimensional network. Because of how the atoms are arranged, diamond is a particularly hard substance.
