Herpes zoster, another name for shingles, is a viral infection that damages the brain-originating cranial nerves. It is brought on by the same virus that causes chicken pox, varicella zoster. Anyone who has had chicken pox in the past has the risk of acquiring shingles since the virus can remain dormant in the body for many years. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one million cases of shingles vaccine are recorded in the United States per year as of 2018.
