Opioid Use Disorder are chemicals that interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain to alleviate pain. They are generated naturally or synthetically in laboratories to replicate the molecular features of opioids. Prescription pain medications, synthetic opioids, and heroin all fall into this category. Acute pain, such as that caused by an injury or surgery, chronic pain, active-phase cancer treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care are all conditions for which prescription opioids are prescribed.

Misuse of prescribed opioid drugs, diverted opioid medications, or illicitly obtained heroin are all examples of Opioid Use Disorder is a relapsing, chronic condition that is linked to significantly higher rates of morbidity and mortality.
