The integration of systems, including industry-standard laboratory equipment and user-defined work cells, is the biggest challenge in designing and putting in place a laboratory automation system. Instrument software and instrument hardware are the main proprietary impediments to deployment. Lab automation solutions will proliferate as instrument manufacturers realize how important it is to establish electronic and physical integration. There are several options for lowering laboratory costs and creating new jobs, like a "robotechnologist," a worker who would perform duties comparable to those of the current laboratory information systems manager. The author's ideas for laboratory automation are described in this essay.
