Pharmaceutical Drug Delivery has the potential to revolutionise the treatment of retinal diseases. There are many drugs that are reasonably effective for treating retinal conditions, but their effectiveness is limited by delivery issues such as the need for the molecule to cross the blood-eye barrier, to be present for long periods of time, or to mitigate side effects. Drug delivery technology, whether it is cellular delivery systems, microelectromechanical (MEMs)-based devices, polymer matrices, or gene delivery systems, can solve the challenges of having drugs at a physiologically relevant concentration for extended periods of time or in a localised delivery system.
