The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a novel anesthesia-free approach for inserting ear tubes, known as tympanostomy tubes, giving clinicians an in-office option for the routine treatment.

The Ear Tube Devices can stay in place for a long time depending on how quickly the child's eardrum grows, but they usually stay in place for 9 to 15 months.

Perforation (a hole in the ear drum) or removal by an ear, nose, and throat specialist may occur if ear tubes are left in place for too long. Perforation: When the site of the tube in the ear drum does not heal after the tube is removed, a hole in the ear drum might form.
