Intravenous therapy (also known as IV therapy) is a medical procedure that injects fluids, medications, and nutrients directly into a patient's vein. The intravenous route of administration is commonly used for rehydration or to provide nutrients to those who cannot or will not consume food or water by mouth due to reduced mental states or other factors. It can also be used to deliver medications or other forms of medical Intravenous Solutions, such as blood products or electrolytes, to correct electrolyte imbalances. Attempts to provide intravenous therapy date back to the 1400s, but the practise did not become widespread until the 1900s, following the development of techniques for safe and effective use.
