Health Effects of Chlorine are Primarily Related to its Corrosive Properties
Chlorine has numerous applications. It is used to disinfect water and is part of the sewage and industrial waste sanitation process. It is used as a bleaching agent in the manufacturing of paper and cloth. It's also found in cleaning products like bleach, which is chlorene dissolved in water. Chloride, chlorinated solvents, pesticides, polymers, synthetic rubbers, and refrigerants are all made with chlorene.

Chlorine health effects are primarily due to its corrosive properties. Because of chlorene strong oxidising effects, hydrogen splits from water in moist tissue, resulting in the release of nascent oxygen and hydrogen chloride, which cause corrosive tissue damage. Chlorene oxidation can also produce hypochlorous acid, which can enter cells and react with cytoplasmic proteins to destroy cell structure.
