Cupric chloride is hygroscopic, which means it can easily absorb water or water vapours. Anhydrous cupric chloride is reddish brown in colour; however, hydrous cupric chloride crystals are greenish blue. Cupric chloride is highly water soluble and dissolves in water to form a greenish blue solution. Despite the abundance of copper in nature, cupric chloride is only found in trace amounts in some minerals and near fumaroles of volcanoes, particularly in arid areas. Cupric chloride, on the other hand, is widely manufactured commercially for a wide range of applications.

It is also used in the petroleum industry as a purifying agent in the production of indelible, invisible, and laundry marking inks. Significant growth in the aforementioned industries is propelling the Cupric Chloride market forward. According to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, insecticides account for 60% of the Indian crop protection market, followed by fungicides, herbicides, and bio-pesticides. The chlorination of copper metal in the presence of water produces cupric chloride. It can also be made from copper sulphate in the presence of hydrochloric acid.
