silicon carbide

Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum (/krbrndm/), is a silicon and carbon-based hard chemical compound. Silicon Carbide occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite, but has been mass-produced as a powder and crystal for use as an abrasive since 1893. Sintering can bond silicon carbide grains together to form very hard ceramics, which are widely used in applications requiring high endurance, such as car brakes, clutches, and ceramic plates in bulletproof vests. The Lely method can be used to grow large single crystals of silicon carbide, which can then be cut into gems known as synthetic moissanite.
