A variable frequency drive (VFD) is a type of motor controller that controls an electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to it. A variable speed drive is also known as an adjustable speed drive, an adjustable frequency drive, an AC drive, a microdrive, and an inverter. Frequency (or hertz) is proportional to motor speed (RPMs). In other words, the higher the frequency, the greater the speed of the RPMs. In other words, the higher the frequency, the higher the RPMs. If an application does not require an electric motor to run at full speed, the VFD can be used to ramp down the frequency and voltage to meet the load requirements of the electric motor. As the application's motor speed requirements change, the Variable Frequency Drive can simply increase or decrease the motor speed to meet the speed requirement.
