As far as the technical applications of Smart Materials is concerned, it involves composite materials embedded with fiber optics, sensors, actuators, micro-electro Mechanical Systems, sound control, vibration control, shape control, intelligent processing, cure monitoring, product health or lifetime monitoring, active and passive controls, novel indicating devices, artificial organs, designed magnets, self-repair, damping aero-elastic stability and stress distributions. Smart structures can be found in automobiles, fixed-and rotary-wing aircrafts, space systems, civil structures, naval vessels, machine tools, and medical devices, among others.
There are already many Smart Materials that are designed and created through the number, and applications, will grow over the next decade. In the U.S., organizations such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation have promoted the use of smart materials in industrial and commercial applications. This in turn is also expected to increase the demand for smart materials in this region.
