Orthopedic Device

As the number of Orthopedic Devices implanted grows, more emphasis is being placed on ceramic coating technology to reduce friction and wear in mating total joint replacement components, thereby improving implant function and increasing device lifespan. In this chapter, we look at ultra-hard carbon coatings as alternative bearing surfaces for metallic components, with a focus on nanostructured diamond. Because of their extreme hardness, wear resistance, low friction, and biocompatibility, such coatings have a high potential for use in biomedical implants. Several techniques can be used to deposit these ultra-hard carbon coatings, resulting in a wide range of structures and properties.
