Visceralpain occurs from a delicate issue within your gastrointestinal tract. These mayresult from pancreatitis, irritable bowel disease, cancer, or any other problemwith internal organ systems. Visceral pain treatment may include over thecounter (OTC) pain medication and NSAIDs to control inflammation, and narcoticpain medications. Although these drugs are highly effective, they do have sideeffects that patients may not be willing to tolerate.

Thereare two major categories of pain management in visceral pain treatment:neuropathic pain and somatic pain. Neuromuscular pain originates within thebody itself and is usually referred to as 'nerve pain' or 'sciatica'.Neuropathic pain results from damage to the nervous system which, in rareinstances, can be life-threatening. Common examples of neuropathic pain arediabetes and gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease, ulcers anddiverticulitis.

Invisceral paintreatment, both neuromuscularand neuropathic pain can be relieved by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs include aspirin, ibuprofen andnaproxen sodium. They all help reduce the inflammation and pain caused bystomach irritation and inflammation in the intestines. However, NSAIDs do havesome serious side effects including ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, stomachulcers and stroke. For this reason, patients are encouraged to seek other treatmentsfor stomach pain other than NSAIDs.
