A Hypoxia chamber can be used as analternative to an isolette. This type of chamber has a number of partitions toallow for the transfer of oxygen to a different chamber. The chambers also helpto control the amount of oxygen available. These are useful in subjects thatare hyperoxic or underdilated. The Hypoxia Chamber consists of four stages. Thefirst stage of a hypoxia cycle is called the starter preparation. It allows forthe collection of cells for use in the next stage of the culture. The Hypoxiachamber can also be called the culture chamber. The second stage, known as theinduction phase, is used to introduce oxygen into the culture and to maintainlow oxygen environments during the remainder of the cycle.
Hypoxiachamberequipment contains electrodes that are connected to tanks of compressed air andoxidizer. The air is cycled through the chamber and stored. The compressed aircontained within the tank is exchanged with fresh air before being passedthrough the electrodes. The oxygen levels within the chamber are maintained atnormal limits. When the chamber is opened, the low oxygen incubators return totheir starting values and the cycle is repeated. An alternative to the chamberis a portable Hypoxia Accelerator. These portable units contain a tank ofcompressed air and stainless steel reusable vacuum bags. The air is replacedwith pure oxygen gas and the stainless steel vacuum bags are replaced with afresh batch of cells. Because the air is replaced with air, there is no need tomaintain the chamber.
