ABSTRACT
Ayurveda is the most ancient science of indian system of medicine, it has been saving the lives of people through its natural way of healing. As we can see that nowadays the prevalence rate of genetic and autoimmune disorders has shown a great hike from the past few years. In this article we are also going to discuss a very rare condition unknown as MOG antibody disease. So let’s start discussing this in detail.
INTRODUCTION
MOG antibody disease also known as ‘MOGAD’ or anti- MOG associated encephalomyelitis is a neuro-inflammatory disorder in which there is an inflammation of optic nerve, but along with that inflammation of spinal cord and brain is also seen. In this there is a presence of serum anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibodies in half of the patients with this acquired demyelinating syndrome. In this following changes are seen such as- acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, optic neuritis and neuromyelitis optica.

According to ayurveda we can correlate this disease with ‘pitta avrit pran vayu’. As it is an inflammatory condition and no inflammation can occur without pitta dosha. This type of vata is situated primarily in the head, brain and upper body. It plays a major role in perception of senses (such as visual, auditory etc) thoughts etc.
COMMON CAUSES
It includes all those common conditions that will give rise to generate a pathological condition in our body. As per ayurveda they are known as ‘nidan’ and ‘hetu’

- Due to the presence of anti-aquaporin 4 antibodies (AQP4) a type of protein in the blood is considered as the prime cause of the disease.
- Autoimmunity- it is considered as an autoimmune disease.
- Presence of viral infections.
SIGN / SYMPTOMS
IT MEANS THE GENERAL COMPLAINTS ALONG WITH WHICH PATIENTS PRESENT IN FRONT OF THE PHYSICIAN. IN MOGAD, FOLLOWING BELOW LISTED SYMPTOMS ARE GENERALLY SEEN
- People experience pain in the eye during eye movement.
- Blurred vision.
- Loss of colored vision
- In a few rare cases there will be a complete loss of vision.
- Paralysis of limbs.
- Loss of sensation
- Loss of urinary bladder control
- Sometimes seizures may be seen.
DIAGNOSIS
IT INCLUDES THE COMMON DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES WE CAN USE TO RECOGNIZE THE DISEASE
- Cell based flow cytometry assays.
- MOG antibody test.
- Cerebrospinal fluid study- CSF contains neutrophil granulocytes and CSF L- lactate level seems to be elevated.
- Radiological examination-
- CT scan (Computed tomography scan)
- MRI scan (Magnetic resonance imaging)
- Histopathological examination
MANAGEMENT
SUPPORTIVE THERAPY
- Use of corticosteroid medications.
- Plasma exchange therapy.
- If recurrent infection is present use of immunosuppressant medication for long term is generally used.
TREATMENT MODALITIES ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

- Panchakarma therapy (Detoxification procedures)
- Snehana karma (oleation therapy) – Smoothing the body dosha’s by using herbal ghrit/oil.
- Mridu svedan (gentle fomentation) – fomentation is done with herbs that possess mild action.
- Mridu vaman (inducing emesis with mridu dravya (herb that are not very strong/harsh in action)
- Tarpan therapy (eye treatment) is a type of rasayana treatment as it provides nourishment to the eyes. More specifically it means “akshi tarpana” akshi means eyes and tarpana means providing strength to the eyes by using herbal medicated formulations such as ghrit and oil.
