How Much Ivermectin Should You Take for Human Infections?
How Much Ivermectin Should You Take for Human Infections?
Ivermectin for humans should be administered orally or parenterally by injection, depending on its formulation.

What do horses, cows, pigs, and humans have in common? All of these animals are often treated with ivermectin, the powerful worming medication that can kill all sorts of parasitic worms and mites, including horse bots and screwworms. So what’s the difference between how much ivermectin you give a horse versus how much you give your pet pig? And how much should you take yourself if you find yourself infected with one of these nasty parasites?

6% topical cream (0.03% gel)

Apply a thin layer of cream (or gel) to the affected area 2 times per day. Wash hands after applying. Do not bandage or wrap treated areas. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and other mucous membranes, unless using a product that is made for use in these areas. Limit sun exposure and wear protective clothing and eyewear when outdoors (e.g., long-sleeved shirts and pants). Use sunscreen daily to limit sun exposure if your skin is sensitive to sunlight. Do not use near open flame or while smoking until dry. Avoid heat such as hot tubs, saunas, and electric blankets/sleeping bags until completely dry after bathing because Ivermectin for sale can irritate skin before it dries.

1% oral solution

Ivermectin for humans should be administered orally or parenterally by injection, depending on its formulation. There are several different types of ivermectin available, each in different formulations that are used for different types of infections. For example, animals may be given a 1% injectable suspension when treating parasitic infections. People should not be treated with an injectable version of ivermectin because it can cause high blood pressure, which can lead to serious complications. To treat a parasitic infection in humans, oral or topical forms are preferred (1). Oral formulations are often preferred because they have fewer side effects and don’t need to be injected. A 1% oral solution is commonly prescribed to treat certain worm infections, such as pinworm infestations (2). When using a 1% solution for pinworms, you should take one milliliter of ivermectin per kilogram of body weight per day. This means that if you weigh 150 pounds (68 kilograms), you would take 15 milliliters—or three teaspoons—of ivermectin every day for two weeks. The dose may be repeated in two weeks if necessary.

1% injectable suspension

Adults and children over 6 years of age may be given 100 to 200 micrograms/kg per day by intramuscular injection in three or four divided doses. The dosage should be adjusted according to patient response, but daily doses greater than 400 micrograms/kg are not recommended. For treating strongyloidiasis, a dose of 800 micrograms/kg is recommended initially. This may be followed by 400 micrograms/kg daily for 3 days, then reduced to 200 micrograms/kg daily until a total dose of 2 milligrams per kilogram has been given, provided that no signs or symptoms remain after two consecutive courses of treatment.

2% oral paste in a bottle

A 2% paste of ivermectin in water can be given to cattle and horses. It is applied to large areas of skin and kills most adult parasites, including lice, ticks, and mites. The oral paste should not be used on dogs or cats. If these animals need ivermectin for human treatment consult your veterinarian as tablets are more appropriate. Do not use it on sheep and goats as they may develop toxic reactions from it. Do not apply directly to their eyes, nose, or mouth. For best results, apply after milking has been completed but before grazing begins again. Apply at least one day before calving so that newly born calves will also receive protection against lice infestation at birth. This product must only be used under veterinary supervision.

3-6% topical solution for dogs and cats

Ivermectin is an antiparasitic agent that is widely used in veterinary medicine. It is a broad-spectrum drug and thus has a wide range of applications, such as ectoparasites (e.g., fleas, mites), endoparasites (e.g., heartworms), intestinal parasites, arthropod vectors (mosquitoes, ticks) and others. It acts by selectively inverting inhibitory synaptic transmission at neuromuscular junctions; it has no effect on acetylcholine-dependent neurotransmission in synapses with GABA or glutamate as neurotransmitters.

4% injectable suspension for horses, cattle, pigs, sheep

200-300 mcg/kg (1.1-1.5 mg/lb) IM, repeated in two weeks if needed; note that topical administration is considered medically ineffective; injectable dosage may be repeated after two months if parasites remain a problem in an area, with a maximum of six treatments per year; do not use in animals allergic to ivermectin or related macrocyclic lactones (eg, doramectin). The safety of treating pregnant animals has not been determined. Do not treat within one month before slaughter for human consumption. Do not administer IV or SQ; will cause severe tissue damage and death. The injectable product should only be used by trained personnel familiar with their handling and use in food-producing animals; follow label instructions carefully when using on horses intended for human consumption.

4% injectable solution for goats, swine, sheep, camels, deer, and llamas

0.2 ml per 100 pounds body weight (1 kg) of the animal. One 2 ml syringe treats one 200-pound horse; administer SQ or IM to neck muscles, one inch apart. Do not mix with other injectable medications. Each vial is good for 2 years after purchase as long as it has been stored in a cool place and protected from light and moisture. Store in a dry place at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Protect from freezing by adding thawed diluent to each vial before use. The following diluents are suitable: Sodium chloride solution USP, Sterile Water for Injection USP, Sodium Chloride Injection BP, and Sterile Water for Injection BP. Thaw only what you need immediately before use by holding under warm running water or at room temperature (do not allow product to come into contact with any heat source). Discard unused portions after thawing.
