It All Began In 1896 US Open

But when the story of Black Owned Golf Brands was revealed, it took you all the way back to 1896. A young Black man named John Shippen became the first American-born Golf Professional that year when he competed in the second U.S. Open Championship. John Matthew Shippen Jr. was an American golfer who competed in a number of early US Opens. He is widely regarded as the first American-born golf professional and the son of a former slave and Presbyterian minister, John Shippen Sr., and Eliza Spotswood Shippen.

Shippen finished fifth in the 1896 US Open after a fantastic round of golf. He was partnered with Charles B. Macdonald, who won the first US Open in 1895.

How Can Golf Fitness Programs Influence The Black Community?

Above all, the goal of 1896 Golf was to inspire the black community to participate in as many Golf Fitness Programs as possible in order to challenge the White Supremacy in this sport in the United States. These trailblazing golfers also spread the message that the black community, like everyone else in the country, deserves equal rights.

Bottomline

Black Americans have not always found golf to be a friendly sport in the United States. Players like Bill Spiller and Ted Rhodes helped pave the path as the first Black golfers to confront the PGA, which solely supports white players, and many Black professional golfers had to struggle and claw their way onto specific courses.
