History

The history of Meghalaya begins with British colonialism, which brought many settlers to Meghalaya from elsewhere in India as well as other areas across the world. This has impacted the cultures and languages still prevalent today throughout Meghalaya. Many tribes live in Meghalaya and follow their own traditions, customs, and religions that have been practised for hundreds of years.
The history of Meghalaya is closely tied with British colonialism in India. Meghalaya was a part of Assam until it became the separate Union Territory Meghalaya which had its first Chief Commissioner appointed by the Government Of India on 21 August 1970. This state has forty-six tribes who speak fifty-eight different languages and dialects altogether! The Garo tribe accounts for twenty-four languages while Khasi consists of eleven tongues including the Pnar language spoken by one million people. There are also many other communities present here such as the Hajong refugee community living in Meghalaya since the 1960's after they migrated from East Pakistan. Meghalaya is one of the Seven Sister States in India known as 'Seven Sisters'.

The Meghalayan Age, which is also called the Meghalayan chronozone or formerly: The Meghalayan series/Epoch, was a worldwide stage and age that began on 22 July 2018 at approximately 18:44 UTC (19:14 BST; 19:44 IST). It had three subdivisions - an earlier subdivision into two stages, corresponding to informal rock layers designated Stage 0 and Stage I before formalization by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) of those divisions as GSSPs after elevation from regional stages to global status with their own international commissioning body – were based on different characteristics of the Meghalayan. The Meghalayan Age succeeds the Northgrippian age and precedes the Holocene, all stages of which were defined by a global group of stratigraphers in 2009.

Geography

Meghalaya has a total area of 22,429 km² with the majority being covered by hills and mountains. Meghalayan is located in northern India on the southern edge of the Himalayas. The Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion covers most of Meghalaya as well as some neighbouring areas in Eastern Bangladesh, Nepal's terai zone and western part of Bhutan which together form one floristic region where trees are not very tall but have wide leaves for capturing sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. This lush green forest consists mainly of wet evergreen trees such as laurels (Litsea spp.) along with many species including teak ("Tectona grandis"), rosewood ("Dalbergia latifolia"), and others. Meghalaya has many rivers such as the Kynshi (Jadukata), Mawpa, Umiam or Barapani, Myngot, and Myntdu which flow from springs in the hillsides to join larger rivers flowing through deep gorges such as River Simsang and Jatinga Valley which eventually flows into Bangladesh's Meghna river basin. It is also home to some of India's popular waterfalls like Shnongpdeng Falls that attract visitors all year long. This region experiences a tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 19-35 degrees Celsius during summers while it can drop down below 12 degrees Celsius during winters because of Meghalayan subtropical forests. Meghalaya is also home to many animals including elephants, leopards, civets, tigers, and flying squirrels along with reptiles like lizards.

Points of Attraction

One of Meghalaya's most famous attractions is the living root bridges which are made from trees that have been trained over many years to grow in a single direction along cliffs or across gorges. The Khasi tribe who lives here has mastered this art and continues their ancient traditions for building bridges today but there are concerns about preserving these structures as they continue to disappear because of modernity, erosion, pollution, and climate change. Some people even live inside Meghalaya caves like Umpiem Mai Cave where one can see handprints on rocks dating back some 500 years while other popular attractions include Shillong Peak with its views overlooking the city at 700 meters above sea level along with falls such as Elephant Falls near Jowai town which is a popular tourist destination. Meghalaya has many museums and other places to visit including the Mawsmai Cave along with others like Jadukata Waterfall, Nohkalikai Falls, Cherrapunjee, Siju Cave which are all located in Shillong while there are also hill stations such as Dawki that offer views of Bangladesh from Meghalayan territory.
