Constrained layer damping is a vibration reduction method used in mechanical engineering. A viscoelastic or other damping substance is placed between two rigid sheets that don't provide enough dampening on their own. Any vibration generated on either side of the constraining materials (the two stiffer materials on the sides) is trapped and dissipated in the viscoelastic or middle layer.
Applying limited layer damping treatments to the cast covers has proven problematic due of their poor surface quality. For a limited layer therapy to operate, the viscoelastic layer must be in touch with the surface. Casting polish and casting tolerances are the most important factors that influence the performance of limited layer treatment.
