Keyboard Test: The Only Way to Know if Your Keyboard is Working Properly
You may not realize it, but the keyboard you’re using at work could be one of the reasons your productivity has been so low lately. If you haven’t ever given much thought to your keyboard, it’s time to start!

How to test your keyboard

It’s very simple to test your keyboard. Just put all your fingers on a flat surface, like a table or desk, and try typing while keeping all fingers on that surface. If you find yourself repeatedly lifting one or more fingers off of that surface before striking a key, then your keyboard isn’t working properly and you should get it fixed by an expert

What to look for when testing a keyboard

A keyboard’s life isn’t a long one. If you use your computer regularly, then it will probably only last you between one and three years, depending on its material. This high turnover means that many people who are shopping for a new keyboard aren’t necessarily looking for quality—they just want something that works. Unfortunately, there are plenty of junky keyboards out there that can lead to hours of lost productivity or even data loss if they cause unexpected issues when typing at length.

If you find issues

It’s best to go into your local computer store and ask for advice. They can help you assess whether it’s a hardware or software issue that needs fixing. And, in some cases, these repair shops will replace it for free—as long as you have an extended warranty. It’s always worth asking! However, before doing so, try running a keyboard test using my next tip. Here’s how

How often should you test?

An effective test schedule depends on how often you use your keyboard. Once every couple months is a good rule of thumb for most people, but there are a few exceptions. If you’re in school and take many notes, for example, you may want to test more frequently than that. If you play video games often, playing on an old or compromised keyboard can affect your performance. Check out our user guide for a comprehensive look at how and why we built Keyboard Test!
