What Are the Different Types of CPAP Masks Available for Sleep Apnea Patients?
1. CPAP NASAL MASKS
The most common CPAP mask style is CPAP nasal masks. It has a triangular shape cushion made of foam or silicone which fits securely and creates a seal for optimum airflow. For a secure fit, most nasal masks have a bracket that wraps around the forehead or the top of the head with the help of a tubing that goes up and over the head or down in front of the face. This creates a seal on the side of the nose and on the bridge.
There are many benefits of using CPAP nasal masks. They are much easier to fit and put on as compared to other types of masks, less bulky than a full-face mask and provide good stability due to head and forehead supports.
There are also cons to using this type of mask. It is ineffective if you are a mouth breather because of pressure leakage. Also, it is not recommended for use if you suffer from allergies or nasal congestion. In addition, the forehead support can obstruct vision your vision.
2. NASAL PILLOW MASKS
The cheapest and least obstructive of all the types of masks is the nasal pillow mask. It has multiple cushions that rest in or around the nostrils thereby creating a seal and delivering air into the nose. As the area around the nostrils is very sensitive, the model you choose will depend on your comfort level. Most styles are secured with straps running along the side or top or across both the top and the side of the head leaving the head free of obstructions.
The benefits of using a nasal pillow mask include a lighter profile, wider range of vision, better seal if you have facial hair and a lower cost than other masks.
As with all types of masks, there are cons to using it. Like nasal masks, they are not ideal if you have allergies or congestion. Also, it can be difficult to find a good fit so you may have to test several models before you find one that is a good fit.
3. CPAP FULL FACE MASK
This is a more traditional type of mask which covers your nose as well as your mouth. It rests across the nose, mouth and cheeks which are secured by straps to create a good airflow.
The advantages of this mask are that it prevents pressure leakage, is high effective even when you have allergies or nasal congestion and is a good choice if you are a back sleeper
There are also many disadvantages to using a full-face mask. It is the most expensive out of all the masks, not ideal for men who have facial hair, can obstruct vision as it is heavier and can induce feelings of claustrophobia.
