A "cap-and-trade" system includes the carbon credi as one of its elements. Polluting businesses receive credits that let them continue to do so up to a cap that is periodically lowered. The company may, in the interim, sell any credits it doesn't need to another company that does. Private companies thus have two reasons to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. They must first purchase additional credits if their emissions are more than the cap. Second, they can make money by reducing their emissions and repurchasing their spare allowances. Advocates of Carbon Credit claim that the system causes accredited climate action programmes to reduce, eliminate, or prevent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a quantifiable, verifiable manner.
