The skin, mucous membranes, and eyes are all severely irritated by acetic acid. The skin may become damaged if exposed to ice-cold acid for a long time. Inhaling Acetic Acid vapours for eight hours at a concentration of ten parts per million (ppm) may produce mild eye, nose, and throat discomfort; at a concentration of one hundred ppm, significant lung irritation and probable lung, eye, and skin damage may follow. IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) vapour concentrations of a thousand ppm are intolerable because they severely irritate the eyes, nose, and upper respiratory system. Experiments on animals and exposure to industry supported these predictions. Despite being rare, acetic acid can make skin more sensitive.
