Remote work – why some people cannot be productive?

After the pandemic, many people secluded themselves in their home offices as they found remote working better than commuting to work. The question is – is this work-from-home culture made people productive? Or they have become lazier? There has been a lot of debate about productivity at remote work. Here is what we have to say.

We know that most companies do not do any routine measure of their productivity. A large number of companies believe that their employees are productive when they work for long hours or under strict supervision, but the opportunity to work from home is forcing companies to re-evaluate their claims. Many giant firms including Google and Amazon have agreed that their remote working staff is doing very well.

Alternatively, we have firms who believe that remote work is making people lose their productivity, and thus, remote work is not good for the long term. So, who should we believe in? No matter how many surveys you conduct, no one can measure the exact productivity of employees at work. There was research conducted in the UK about productivity at remote work and some 1000 respondents took part in the survey.

The respondents were asked to express their views about how productive they are. Were they better at work before the lockdown or after than in a work-from-home setting? Fortunately, more than 50% of them said that they are a bit more productive than how they were earlier. We found that 90% of the respondents believed that they could maintain their productivity at work or it improved. The report also stated that only 10% of people reported that their productivity was down. So, why remote work is making people more productive?

On this, we found out that people saved on daily commuting, and due to this, people remained at peace. Productivity is also associated with mental health so the more employees are at peace, the more productive they are going to be at work. In the same survey, the mental health scores for the productive workers were higher than that of the least productive ones.

Although it is not clear whether poor mental health leads to lower productivity but we can resonate productivity with mental health up to some extent. When people were told to work from home, they felt closer to their family members and they enjoyed working around their families. Although for some, things turned the other way around.
