Hoisted By My Own Petard

Michaelson's book is an exciting, fast-paced thriller that keeps you turning the pages. I enjoyed the plot, which was original and well-crafted, and the protagonist, who is a bit of a flawed hero but still likable. The author did an excellent job of balancing humor with suspense.

 About The Author

Mike Nicholson, his wife Sarah, and their son Myles reside in the Pacific Northwest. He is a Clinical Social Worker who has worked in mental health for two decades in various roles, currently as a therapist and consultant.

He beautifully crafted the characters and the story. All the characters in the story are joined together professionally. Through his book, he also wants people to understand what schizophrenia is and the side effects of this disease if not properly entertained. The author thanks his friend Nathan and Parker for unrelenting support, insight and love in writing this book.

 Overview of the Character "Jack"

Jack is a 19-year-old teenager who develops schizophrenia, battles to live with it, and fights to accept this diagnosis and the difficult symptoms. Jack feels abandoned by society, his family, and his friends, which leads to homelessness, addiction, and criminal activities. Jack seeks and receives assistance when looking for a path back into his life.

 How The Story Starts

It all started when Jack was sitting in a lecture hall at the University of Washington, it was the beginning of his sophomore year of college, and he started hearing voices for the first time that day and didn’t know what was happening. He stood up in the middle of a crowded lecture and hollered in distress. He didn’t say any words, just a visceral reaction, “Whoa!”

This was Jack’s inaugural hallucination that was not caused by the recreational drug use of any kind. What he experienced in the lecture hall that day was different from any previous high or low for that matter. It sounded like a group of people were softly singing behind the hallway door 10 feet to his left. That’s how the whispers began for him. They just started. All of a sudden, he could hear them, and no one else could.

Due to his mental health, Jack feels neglected by society, his family, and his friends. When schizophrenia is active, symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, trouble with thinking and lack of motivation. He became homeless, addicted to drugs and committed criminal activity. He was always on the bottom of the social ladder and felt that society had forgotten him.
